Management of Osteoarthritis (OA)
What is Osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis or OA is a degenerative condition that affects a significant percentage of the adult population. OA can be improved, managed and maintained by physiotherapy and an appropriately prescribed exercise program.
Physiotherapy Management of OA
An appropriately designed management program has been proven to be one of the most effective treatments for OA. Our highly trained physiotherapists can prescribe an effective and research based program tailored to your needs.
Regular exercise is an important part of the program as it can help:
- Improve joint mobility and flexibility
- Increase muscle strength
- Improve posture and balance
While reducing:
- Pain
- Fatigue
- Muscle tension
- Stress
Exercise also improves overall health by:
- Improving cardiovascular fitness
- Improving bone strength
- Reducing body weight
Why can’t I just go to the gym, the pool, a personal trainer or follow a DVD?
General non-prescribed exercises given to clients without sufficient education can increase pain and reduce function.
Exercises should be appropriate for your condition, your health, your lifestyle and your likes and dislikes. A Jubilee Sports physiotherapist will take a thorough history of your condition, your limitations and your lifestyle to design a program that is safe and maximizes your improvement.
I can’t afford to keep coming to the physio each week or I don’t have time to go to the physio each week.
At Jubilee Sports Physiotherapy we aim to show you how to best manage your arthritis. This is done via a program which involves education, exercise, and lifestyle advice. Typically after the initial consultation, you would see the physiotherapist a week later to answer any questions, ensure you are doing the exercises correctly and re-evaluate the function of your joint. As long as you are happy with your progress, you may not need to see the physiotherapist for another 3-4 weeks to review and upgrade your exercises.
Remember, that whilst a Jubilee Sports Physiotherapist cannot ‘cure’ your arthritis, they can certainly help with:
- Reducing pain
- Improving function
- Improving quality of life
- Helping you get back to the activities you enjoy
- Slowing the progression of arthritic symptoms
If you have any questions regarding osteoarthritis and its management or would like to consult with one of the physiotherapists, please contact Jubilee.
