The benefits of surfing span much further than just being physical ~ it’s also great for your mood, and your mind. Local Surfschool owner, Mark Aprilovic discusses the health benefits of surfing.
Have you ever dreamed of riding a wave?
The feeling of gliding down the gentle curve of a breaking wave has captured the imaginations of millions of people. Surfing is not only a great way to stay fit and healthy, it is a way of life. In the words of Kelly Slater:
“The joy of surfing is so many things combined, from the physical exertion of it, to the challenge of it, to the mental side of the sport.”
And now you, and your whole family, can experience what it feels like to be in harmony with the ocean and have a great workout at the same time. Surfing has a number of health benefits including:
- • Weight loss and a toned body – The average person burns around 400 calories an hour while they surf.
- • Cardiovascular fitness – From paddling.
- • Shoulder and back strength – These muscles will strengthen from the paddling.
- • Leg and core strength – Once you’re standing up on the board, strong legs and a strong core will keep you up.
- • Ease stress – Release of endorphins provide a natural euphoria and good mood.
At Surfing Cronulla Surfschool we are professionals at what we do.
Founded in 1994, our Surfschool has built a reputation that is unrivaled in the New South Wales region. Eager intermediate surfers and total beginners come from all over Sydney to be taught by our coaches.
Our goal is to introduce people of all ages to the magic of surfing in a fun and safe environment. We also offer more advanced training courses for surfers who want to add another dimension to their surfing. And our certificate courses are based on a national certification program formulated by Surfing Australia, with the support of the Australian Sports Commission. The courses are structured to allow beginners to easily progress through Levels 1 – 5.
All of our surfing programs are endorsed by the Australian Sports Commission, licensed by Surfing Australia, Surfing NSW and Sutherland Shire Council. All coaches are Level 1-3 accredited with Surfing Australia and hold senior first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and bronze medallion certification. We are also registered with the Department of Sport and Recreation to work with children.
Everything you need to get out on the waves is provided, including learner friendly soft boards, wetsuits, rash shirts and SPF 30+ sunscreen.
We have been pleased to introduce Jubilee’s Physiotherapists Carlee and Michael to the world of surfing. And if they could stand up and ride waves after only a few lessons then I’m sure you can too!
